Job STANDARDS

The preferred candidate must have at least one of the following:

  • Masters designation in business, planning, sustainability or appropriate field
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Registered Engineering Technologist
  • Certified Energy Manager
  • BCIT Sustainable Energy Management Associate
  • UBC Masters in Clean Energy
  • Certified Journeyman Electrician with 20 years experience
  • Certified Technician (HVAC, instrumentation or other relevant discipline) with 20 years experience

And one further education course:

  • Van City - Carbon Footprint - GHG Program
  • LEED Professional Accreditation
  • Courses related to maintenance and management of HVAC systems
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) qualification
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) from a Canadian university
  • Relevant further education in the energy management field

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum five years’ experience in complex organization including roles responsible for:
    • Supervision
    • Capital project management / project management
    • Customer service
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role in complex work environments with a well-developed sense of organizational awareness and capacity to interface with both internal and external parties in multiple management and operational levels
  • Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm related to energy efficiency (work/volunteer experience)
  • Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies
  • Ability to map business process/workflow and identify efficiencies
  • Ability to develop compelling business cases and write comprehensive reports
  • Experience with financial analysis
  • Experience with budget creation, budget preparation, analysis, reporting and management
  • Proven ability to deliver projects on time and on budget
  • Ability to remain flexible to adjusting business operations in support of strategic priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a team approach aimed at accomplishing the university’s goals and to positively influence people and events using consultative, consensus-building techniques

Position Summary

The Energy Manager, reporting to the Director of Operations serves as the Operations and Resilience champion for sustainability and GHG emission reduction.

The incumbent will be responsible for energy management and conservation measures, expenditure reduction strategies, technical solutions, utility and resource data collection, analysis and reporting, outreach and communication services and other specialized energy management program services.  In addition, the energy manager will provide advice to RRU’s climate action team, the Climate Leadership Committee and associated working groups to develop sustainability strategies aimed at resource conservation and greenhouse gas emission mitigation.

The incumbent should possess knowledge of energy management practices and techniques including energy audits, energy codes and standards, building energy use and performance, energy accounting in buildings and facilities, energy rate structures, economic analysis, electric rate structures, waste heat recovery, life cycle costing, fuel supply and fuel switching, electrical energy management, lighting, motors and adjustable speed drives, HVAC systems, energy management controls.

Experience with project management practices and techniques as well as construction and maintenance practices involving various disciplines, are required to provide "cradle-to-grave" management of programs and delivery of projects as they relate to energy management and conservation.  In this role, procurement and contract management, business case analysis, business planning, scheduling, negotiating strategies, and problem-solving techniques, are all critical to effective initiation and management of projects.

An understanding of relevant governmental initiatives and funding programs (at all levels), legislation, policies, code requirements and recommended practices of recognized industry and professional organizations which govern energy conservation is essential.

Experience with a variety of engineering and project management software tools is recommended to organize, communicate and manage work and people to ensure that programs and projects are delivered on time and within budget.
